Non-rechargeable battery for HRU-7000

BPU-7000 is a proprietary non-rechargeable LiMnO2 battery for the HRU-7000 transmitter, developed around 1994 by Telefunken (TST) in Ulm (Germany). It is part of the HRM-7000 manpack radio. The battery can power the radio for approx. three days and can be recycled.

This high-capacity battery has the standard form factor of 222 × 148 × 51 mm, and weights 2.2 kg. It is housed in a die-cast aluminium enclo­sure that consists of two case shells, held to­gether by four hex-screws at the corners. A silicone sealing makes the device watertight.

At the bottom is a connector with three contacts on which the battery voltage of 16.8V is availa­ble. It has a rubber sealing to make it watertight when fitted to the HRU-7000 transceiver. The battery has a capacity of 20Ah, which should be sufficient for at least three days of 'normal' use.
  

The BPU-7000 cannot be recharged, but is constructed in such a way that it can easily be reused. Users are instructed not to dispose them after use, but send them back through the regular logistic channel. To avoid fire hazard, the battery should first be fully discharged in a controlled manner. This is done by toggling the internal discharge switch and wait until the LED is off.

Use with HRU-7000
The BPU-7000 was designed especially for use with the HRU-7000 transceiver as part of the HRM-7000 manpack. It is fitted to the lower half of the transceiver and is held in place by four metal stubs (cast in the body of the HRU-7000), and two spring-loaded clips at the sides.

When fitted to the HRU-7000, the battery is watertight. Various alternative batteries are available, including rechargeable NiCd and NiMH versions, albeit with a lower capacity.

Use with the FS-5000/M
The BPU-7000 was also used with the FS-5000M — a modified version of the FS-5000 spy radio set that was used for educational purposes during the development of the HRM-7000. This was necessary because the original batteries of the FS-5000 had become obsolete.

Interior
Inside the battery are 12 high-capacity LiMnO2 power cells, connected in series to deliver a no­mi­nal voltage of 16.8V. The cells are similar in size to regular 1.5V type D batteries (monocell), and are glued inside the bottom case shell by means of a strong black Araldite compound.

Exhausted batteries can be given a new lease of life, by removing the existing cells and replacing them with new (preferably rechargeable) ones. Alternatively, it might be possible to convert an exhausted battery into a mains power supply unit (PSU).
