Phones PTT MBLE
Analogue desktop telephone set
Heemaf Model 1955 was a standard analogue telephone set
for desktop use with pulse dialling, in a black bakelite enclosure,
developed in 1955 and manufactured by the Heemaf machine factory in Hengelo
(Netherlands) for the Dutch state-owned telecom monopolist PTT 1 .
The set was intended for use on the Dutch public
switched telephone network (PSTN) 2 , or POTS. 3

The image on the right shows an example of the Heemaf 1955 in mint
condition, as if it has just been unpacked. It is shown here with the
rare extra speaker
option that is seated in a cradle at the
back of the set. It can be very useful in noisy environments, or for
allowing another person to listen-in on a conversation.
The extra speaker only works whilst its rectangular button pressed.
The white circular dot on top of the set, just above the dial, is
the so-called ground-button which was used to put a call on hold
on a local PABX, and to pass calls on to another extension.

On some models, the white ground-button is missing, in which case
the black PTT logo is shown in black at this location. The set is
housed in a shiny black bakelite enclosure, designed in 1954
by Dutch graphic
artist and industrial designer Gerard Kiljan (1891-1968) [1].
The interior of this set is very similar to that of the
Ericsson Model 1951
and the Standard Electric Model 1954.
The phone was manufactured for the Dutch PTT by the Heemaf
factory in Hengelo (Netherlands) from 1955 onwards, well into the 1960s,
after which the PTT gradually replaced them by the newer T-65 models.
In 1970, some of the surplus Heemaf Model 1955 phones became available
to hobbyists and collectors in the US through Tandy/Radio Shack outlets [2].
For the Belgian market, the Heemaf 1955 was manufactured in Belgium by
Philips subsidary MBLE.

They would later become the directors and finally

The NRP is known for their early developments in

but also for their special equipment for the
Dutch Radio Monitoring Service (RCD)
and the American
