Compromise
On 28 January 2023, German magazine Der Spiegel published a story about Jan Marsalek, former manager and key player in the Wirecard fraud scandal in which billions of Euros were lost. According to Der Spiegel, Marsalek – an Austrian citizen – had been spying for at least 10 years for the Russian intelligence service FSB [5]. In 2019, with help from the FSB, Marsalek fled to Moscow where he has since been living under several false identities.

In a follow-up article of 3 April 2024, Der Spiegel revealed that in November 2022, Marsalek had provided the Russian FSB with a laptop with SINA Technology [4]. It is currently unclear what this means for the security of the equipment, which is also used by NATO. It is possible that it was used by the Russian to find vulnerabilities that could be exploited, but it is also possible that it was used to learn from, in order to improve their own security.
