SafeNet
SafeNet Inc. was an information security company based in Belcamp (Maryland, US). The company was founded as Industrial Resource Engineering (IRE) in 1983 by two NSA Engineers. In 1987 the name was changed to Information Resource Engineering (IRE), which went public in 1989.

In 1995, IRE produced its first Virtual Private Network (VPN) called SafeNet. The product became so popular that in 1999 the company was renamed to SafeNet as well. SafeNet has grown immensly over the years, mainly due to a large number of acquisitions from 2002 onwards.

The most notible acquisition by SafeNet was that of Rainbow Technologies (formerly Mykotronx) in 2004. At the time, Rainbow was twice the size of SafeNet. The former Mykotronx division was then renamed SafeNet Government Solutions and is still based in Torrance (California, USA).

In 2007, SafeNet was acquired by Vector Capital, but continued to operate as an autonomous company, albeit a private one. SafeNet is currently the 5th largest vendor is the security market and the 3rd largest provider of information security solutions in the world, with annual revenues of approx. $500M [1].

On 26 February 2010, the Embedded Security Division of SafeNet was acquired by AuthenTec (USA) [2]. On 8 January 2015 it was announced that the remaining SafeNet activities were taken over by Gemalto, a French company with offices in 44 countries [3]. Note that before that time, some products had been acquired by Raytheon.
