Eracom Technologies AG
Eracom was an Australian multinational manufacturer of cryptographic
appliences, in particular Hardware Security Modules
(HSM), founded in 1979 by data security pioneer Professor William (Bill)
Caelli. DUring the early days of digital data encryption, the company
focussed on building cryptographic hardware to secure Electronic Funds
Transfers (EFT) and cash machines (ATM).
In 1984, Eracom opened its first oversees office.
By 2004 it had 11 international sales offices in four continents, serving
customers in more than 60 countries. While its corporate headquarters
was eventually relocated to Europe — with major operations in Germany and
Switzerland — the Australian engineering division remained the vital core
of its technological development.
The German branch was known as Eracom Technologies GmbH, whilst
the Dutch branch - Concord-Eracom in Amsterdam —
developed complementing software for the European market [1][2].
In 1998, Eracom saw a decline in local business in Australia,
for which they blamed the Australian Government's outsourcing
and purchasing policies [5]. While Eracom's equipment was bought
and trusted in countries like Germany, Belgium, Switzerland,
the Netherlands and Italy, the Australian Government was reluctant
to choose its products unequivocally. After running into financial trouble,
Eracom was sold to the Dutch Concord-Eracom Nederland BV,
which had been selling its hard- and software for the past 10 years.
The new ownership is reflected in the new logo above.
In November 2005, the German branch — Eracom Technologies GmbH —
was taken over for EUR 25 million by SafeNet Inc,
an American company that had been established in 1983 by two former
engineers of the US
National Security Agency (NSA). In May 2006,
Safenet acquired the rest of the company by taking over
Eracom Technologies Australia Pty Ltd [3][4].
In late 2014, Safenet was taken over by Gemalto for USD 890 million,
but kept trading as SafeNet in some countries.
In March 2020, the former Australian Eracom business, was acquired
from Gemalto by Thales [3].
