Covert miniature tape recorder - this page is a stub

M-60 was a covert miniature body-wearable open reel audio tape recorder, introduced in 1967 by Electro Data Inc. (EDI) in Fort Lee (New Jersey, USA). The device is nearly identical to the UMY-25 which was developed in 1962 especially for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In 1966, when the CIA switched to Nagra tape recorders, the UMY-25 was released to the free market as the M-60 [1]. The device was short-lived and was succeeded the same year by the M-75B.

The M-60 (mono) and B-60 (binaural, stereo) were anounced in an article in Electronics Illustrated of July 1967 [1], but at the time of printing the devices were not yet available for testing. According to the article, they were still in production. The specifications listed below are taken from this article and had been provided by the manufactuer (EDI). So far, we have never seen the M-60 or B-60 models. It is entirely possible that the devices were short-lived, or that by the time they were released – late 1967 – the stereo version had meanwhile been renamed M-75B.

For further details about this device, such as photographs, circuit diagram and background information, please refer to our page about the EDI M-75B, which is believed to be (nearly) identical to the B-60 — the stereo version (M-60).
