History
The company was established in 1922 as the American Appliance Company in Cambridge (Massachusetts, US), by Laurence K. Marshall and Vannevar Bush – two former roommates of the Tufts University School of Engineering – along with scientist Charles G. Smith. One of their first products was Raytheon, 1 a so-called battery eleminiator — in fact a valve-based rectifier — that could be installed an a radio's battery compartment to allow it to be powered from the AC mains.

In 1925, the company changed its name to Raytheon Manufacturing Company and successfully marketed its rectifier under the Raytheon brand name. In 1928, the company merged with QRS Company – a manufacturer of tubes and switches – but went on as the Raytheon Manufacturing Company, and would eventually become one of the world's largest producers of vacuum tubes. 1

During WWII, Raytheon made fame by mass-producing the magnetron tube – a British invention – that was needed for emerging radar systems. By the end of the war, Raytheon produced 80% of all magnetrons in the world. The household microwave oven would eventually be a spin-off of this.

Over the years, the company had a presence in the aviation and computer industries, but has meanwhile sold most of the related business units. One of its greatest achievements was the Apollo Guidance Computer that flew all Apollo (moon) missions in the 1960s and 70s. In 1991 – during the First Gulf War – they received great international exposure with their Patriot missiles.

Following the First Gulf War, Raytheon tried to increase its market share in the defense electronics business, by means of numerous acquisitions. On 9 June 2019 it was announced that a merger of equals would take place between Raytheon and the aerospace companies of United Technologies. On 3 April 2020, the merger was completed and the merged company went on as Raytheon Technologies Corporation (RTC). In July 2023, RTC changed its name to RTX Corporation (RTX) [2]. It consisted of the following subsidaries:

  • Collins Aerospace
  • Pratt & Whitney
  • Raytheon (formerly Raytheon Intelligence & Space and Raytheon Missiles & Defense)
In April 2024, RTX sold its cybersecurity and intelligence division was sold to an undisclosed party for US$ 1.3 billion. The new company beame known as Nightwing [3]. Although the buyer was not named, Reuters previously reported it as private equity firm Blackstone [3].

  1. Raytheon means Light of the Gods.
  2. In British English: thermionic valves.
