Federal Bureau of Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, abbreviated FBI, is the domestic and
security service
of the United States of America (USA), and also its
principal federal law enforcement agency [1]. The FBI operates under the
jurisdiction of the US Department of Justice (DoJ) and is a
member of the US Intelligence Community.
It reports to both the US Attorney
General and the Director of National Intelligence.
The FBI has jurisdiction of violations of more than 200 categories of
federal crimes.
The FBI headquarters is the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington DC.
It has 56 field offices in major cities
throughout the US and more than 400 resident agencies in smaller
cities and areas across the US [2].
The FBI has 60 Legal Attache (LEGAT) offices
and 15 sub-offices in US embassies and consulates around the globe.
These offices are primarily intended for coordination with foreign
security services, and (usually) not for unilateral secret operations.
In the US, the FBI is responsible for counter-terrorism,
counterintelligence and investigations against federal crimes.
Within the Five Eyes intelligence alliance,
the FBI is responsible for Security Intelligence.

The FBI was established in 1908 as the Bureau of Investigation, abbreviated
BOI or BI. In 1935, under the tenure of J. Edgar Hoover (1924-1972), the
name changed to FBI. Hoover was also responsible for the creation of the
Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory – commonly known as the FBI Laboratory –
which opened in 1932. But he was also controversial. He introduced
illegal evicence collection methods like warrantless wiretapping,
and kept secret files on political leaders [3].
After his death, legislation was passed to limit the tenure of FBI directors
to ten years.
