Optoelectronics, Inc. is a manufacturer of equipment for RF testing,
Technical Surveillance and Countermeasures (TSCM) and Counter Surveillance,
based in Roswell (GA, USA). The company offers bug detectors,
near field receivers and TSCM sweep kits.
Optoelectronics was founded around
1972 in Ft. Lauderdale (FL, USA), and was later relocated to
Boca Raton (FL, USA).
Optoelectronics was incorporated in the State of Florida on 26 September 1974
by Linda Ross Hufft (29 April 1943 — 28 March 2017) and her husband Fred Hufft.
In the first years, the company rose to fame with the introduction of a range
of affordable professional frequency counters for the professiomal and amateur
market, some of which were available as self-build kits.
All products were developed in-house by an innovative
engineering team, initially with hired consultant James Baughman and later
with resident enigeers like William (Bill) Owen and Judd Sheets, both of
whom are registered as inventors on patents filed on behalf of the company.
The couple divorced in 1988, after which Fred Hufft left Optoelectronics to
found his own company by the name of Startek.
Startek offered a similar range of portable frequency counters
and was also based in Fort Lauderdale (FL, USA).
After the divorce, Optoelectronics was run by Linda Ross Hufft —
at the time, one of the very few women in the 'men's world' of
electronics. Under her leadership, Optoelectronics flourished and became a respected name in both the amateur and professional RF industry, selling
products to amateur radio operators worldwide,
as well as to US government agencies and the military.
In 2007, the company was relocated to Boca Raton (FL, USA).
After her death in 2017, Linda Ross Hufft was inducted in the CQ Amateur Radio
Hall of Fame [5]. From then on the company was co-owned by daughter Cynthia
Cox and son-in-law Kevin Cox, both of whom had already been involved in
management of the company for several years.
