Portable VHF/UHF surveillance receiver
- help wanted
D/1754 is a portable valve-based surveillance receiver for the VHF and UHF bands, intended for the reception of
covert listening devices (bugs) and as a
countermeasure
against bugs.
Rumour has it that this device was used by HMGCC
at Hanslope Park (UK). It was probably developed in the US
— most of the parts are American —
by a source close to the US intelligence community.
|
The device is housed in a metal enclosure with grey wrinkle paint finish.
It measures 410 × 250 × 140 mm and weights 11.5 kg. Although it is a portable
device — it has a foldable grip at the top — it does not have provisions for
batteries. Instead the device can only be powered by the built-in AC mains
power supply unit (PSU).
The model number – D/1754 – is by no means certain. It is also
possible, if not likely, that this was an inventory number of HMGCC,
as it is only present on the yellow-ish DYMO label at the top left of the
front panel. It was fitted in the 1970s.

Most of the internal parts, such as the fuses and valves (tubes) are from the
US. The meter is made by Simpson Electric Co. (USA) and is stamped 51395.
The potentiometers are made by OHMATE (USA) and the valves are made by GE
and RCA. The electrolytic capacitors are made by ATOMS (USA).
The only thing British, is the Bulgin connector of the PSU,
and is clearly an aftermarket modification.
A special feature of this receiver is the permeability tuning.
At present, we have absolutely no information about this receiver.
We would like to know who made this device and when. And where and how it was
used. What is the actual model name or number. We would also like to see a
user and/or service manual, preferable with circuit diagrams.
If anyone has additional information, please contact us,
so that we can enhance this page.
