Wireline Terminal
Secure telephone unit for PSTN - this page is a stub

Sectéra Wireline Terminal, abbreviated SWT or WT, is a secure interface for existing analogue telehone equipment, developed around 2008 by General Dynamics in Needham (MA, USA) and endorsed by the US National Security Agency (NSA) for communication up to the level of SECRET. It is connected between a PSTN telephone set (or fax unit) and the subscriber line, and provides (voice) encryption using a variety of algorithms, including AES and optionally a Type 1 algorithm.

SWT was rolled out from 2008 onwards as an alternative for the end-of-life (EOL) Secure Telephone Equipment (STE), especially in situations where analogue PSTN equipment was used. It was declared end-of-support (EOS) by the NSA in 2019, after it became clear that it could not be upgraded to the NSA's new Advanced Cryptologic Capabilities (ACC) requirements [1]. As a result, support for analogue PSTN equipment has practically disappered. Existing users were advised to move to IP-based telephone lines and the vIPer Universal Secure Phone as an alternative.
