Infrared distress marker strobe
MS-2000M is a
covert
military distress marker, or strobe-light, made
by Fedcap Rehab Services (FRS) in New York (USA). The device can produce visible or
infrared (IR) light, and was intended for use by Special Forces (SF)
in case of an emergency. It is also known as NSN 6230-01-411-8535.
|
The device is small enough to fit in a pocket.
It measures 113 x 54 x 27 mm and weighs just 150 grams, batteries
included. It is powered by two standard AA-size penlight batteries,
that are installed in the inserted black part at the bottom.
The battery holder is constructed in such a way that its cover
can not be lost and that the user can feel the polarity of
the batteries in the dark. The device is switched ON with a black
sliding switch at the long side, that is constructed in such a way
that it can't be activated accidentally.
When ON, it flashes at one-second intervals.

The image above shows a typical MS-2000M, of which the infrared filter cap
has been removed from the flash bulb. When the
filter is placed over the flashlight,
the device produces no visible light 1 whatsoever. When used with
the IR filter, the flashes can only be observed with a suitable IR-viewer,
such as the Russian JASEN,
or other infrared-sensitive night vision
devices (NVD).
Most Special Forces have meanwhile abandonned the use of infrared light
sources, as they also reveal their position to a potential enemey, if that
enemy is also using infrared-sensitive viewers. For this reason, the markers
have since become available through (military) surplus stores.

Note that the digital camera on some older mobile phones can detect
some level of infrared light, as can be observed in
this YouTube video

The diagram below gives a quick overview of the features of the MS-2000M.
In the image, the watertight cap has been removed from the battery compartment,
so that the batteries are now visible. The cap is fastened to the body
with a nylon cord, so that it won't be lost.
There are two embossed dots on the body of the device, close to the battery
compartment. The dots indicate the position of the (+) terminals of the
batteries, allowing them to be installed in the dark.
