Surveillance bug receiver
- this page is a stub
31225, also known as Gerät 1255 (Device 1225), is a microprocessor
controlled surveillance receiver
for the 940-980 MHz frequency range, developed around 1982 in the former DDR (East Germany) at Aussenstelle Beucha
of the Institut für Technische Untersuchungen (ITU) 1 . It was used
by the repressive East German Stasi
for the reception of covert listening devices (bugs).
|
The device is housed in a metal enclosure that measures 195 x 185 x 7 cm
and weighs no less than 3.2 kg. Compared to similar devices of the
era, the 31225 must have been a real highlight.
It has the ability to connect a remote control unit, lockout local operation
(by means of a key) and direct entering of a frequency via the keypad.
But the most important features of this receiver are arguably the wide IF
bandpass and the very large tracking range of the Automatic Frequency
Correction (AFC), making it the ideal companion for the
free running bugs of the era.

The 31225 was introduced in 1982 as the successor to the
31215 receiver.
It was supplied in a Samsonite-style briefcase, along with a
wide range of ancillaries,
including a power supply unit (PSU),
a remote control unit (RCU),
various headphones
and a flat planar antenna.
For reception of
subcarrier-modulated bugs
(dual-FM) the
external LWE6-1 demodulator
was used. Later versions of the 31225 were fitted with an internal dual-FM
demodulator. The receiver has 4
audio outputs, of which 3 are squelch-controlled, plus an
output for controlling an external recording device.

Institut für Technische Untersuchungen (ITU) was a covert operation
of the OTS, the Operativ-technische Sektor (Technical Operations
Sector) of the MfS (Stasi).
Not to be confused with the CIA's OTS.
