Fernschreiberprüfgerät MES 2/3
Fernschreiberprüfgerät MES 2/3, is a
teleprinter test device,
developed around 1991 by Heeresinstandsetzungswerk 870
(Army Repair Depot 870) in Bad Bergzabern (Germany) 1 — part of the
German Army (Bundeswehr).
Is was used as a repair tool for some popular teleprinter equipment.
|
The device is housed in a green metal enclosure that consists of two halves,
held together by a hinge at the rear and two snap-locks at the front.
The upper half contains the mains power cable, the 24V power cable and the
operating instructions. It can be detached if necessary.
The lower half contains the actual device. All controls and connections are
at the top. It has connections for virtually any type of teleprinter with
a V.10, ADo4 (ADoS) or
ADo8 plug. There are banana sockets for connection
to a telex line and to a 600Ω resistor that simulates a long line.
|
|
|
The device was developed especially for the teleprinters that were still
in use with the German Army in the early 1990s, but is perfectly usable
with most other teleprinters. After teleprinters were decommissioned in
the late 1990s, the MES 2/3 was dumped on the surplus market. It can be
found for reasonable prices on eBay and from surplus stores,
such as Bw-Schmitti
in Germany.

The image below provides an overview of the controls and connections. The
case consists of two halves: (1) the actual device, and (2) a hinged lid that also
acts as the storage compartment for the power cables and the operating
instructions. The device is powered from the 220V AC mains or from an external
24V DC source, such as the power source of a 24V powered teleprinter.
In the latter case, the teleprinter itself can be connected to the 3-pin
socket at the control panel.
At the right are three sockets for connecting a teleprinter.
The following interfaces are supported:
|
Also at the right are two banana sockets for connection to a
teleprinter line. They are activated as soon as a plug is inserted
in the upper socket. At the upper edge of the
control panel is a large current meter
that can show positive as well as negative currents. Its function can be
selected with the 4-position rotary selector underneath it (S2).
The following functions are available:
|
10mA Meter 10 mA range 100mA Meter 100 mA range V.10-6V V.10 interface ±6V Pap End Paper-end test (ADo8 only)
|
The device was intended for testing the following devices:
|
Note however that the test abilities are not limited to the above listed
devices. It can be used with virtually any teleprinter or peripheral
device that conforms to the TW39 signalling standard and has one of the
supported interfaces (ADo4, ADo8 or V.10).

Below is the circuit diagram of the MES 2/3 based on the original
operating instructions [A].
Please note that the original circuit diagram contains several mistakes.
At the left are the connectors for 220V AC
input, 24 DC input, 24V DC output and the V.10 interface
socket. The power supply unit (PSU) has two connectors: J1 and J2.
J1 is the 220V AC input.
At the right are the ADo4 (ADoS),
ADo8 and line sockets, each of which is
self-switching. This means that when a plug is inserted, switch S5, S6 or
S7 is opened respectively. The function-selector (S2) selects the type of
test/measurement. The function of the meter
(M1) is selected with S2a and S2c. A protection circuit is connected in
parallel with the meter. The 20-60mA output current on the ADo4, ADo8
and Line sockets is adjusted with potentiometer S4.
T1 is a momentary DPDT switch that simulates a call pulse on the ADo8
and V.10 interfaces. The 600Ω resistor at the top, simulates a line.
The device is powered from the 220V AC mains or a 24V DC source.
The latter is also connected to
the 3-pin socket at the front panel. Note that the device does not
provide 24V for the teleprinter, when it is powered from the
220V AC mains.
