Italian Republic
Italy, officially known as the Italian Republic, is a peninsula in Southern
Europe, in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, that borders with France,
Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Furthermore it holds the enclaved
microstates Vatican City and San Marino, whilst Italy itself has a territorial
enclave in Switzerland (Campione) and a maritime enclave in Tunesian waters
(Lampedusa) [1].
During World War II (WWII),
Italy was a fascist state under Benito Mussolini,
that collaborated with Nazi Germany. The Allied invasion of July 1943 led to
the fall of Mussolini and the collapse of the fascist regime on 25 July 1945.
Nevertheless, the country remained a battlefield for the remainder of the war,
as the Germans succeeded in taking control of northern and central Italy.
After the war, Italy became a republic on 2 June 1946.
It is a founding member of the European Union (EU).
During WWII and the Cold War,
Italy used a variety of spy radio sets, some of which are covered on this
website. During the Cold War,
the Italian Stay-Behind Organisation was known as Gladio.
