3WU, the abbreviation of 3 Watt Universal, was a
clandestine transceiver, also known as a
spy radio set, developed in 1947 by the German intelligence
service Organisation Gehlen (OG) 1
and manufactured in the United States (USA).
The device operated in the HF radio band and has an output power of 3 Watts.
It was intended for covert operations and Stay-Behind Organisations.

It is likely that the 3WU was the first radio set developed by the OG
in its own laboratory. As the occupying Allied Forces did not allow
Germany to manufacture its own high-end equipment,
a prototype of the transceiver was shipped to the USA, where 150 units
were built by an unknown manufacturer. The complementing vibrator packs and
battery chargers were made in the OG's own workshop.
The 3WU was succeeded in 1952 by the modular 12WG,
which was made by OG.
