Radio Corporation of America

The Radio Corporation of America, commonly abbreviated to RCA Corporation or simply RCA, was a major American electronics company, which was founded in 1919 as a subsidary of General Electric (GE). It became an independent company in 1932, as part of a settlement between the US Government and GE, after an anti-trust suit in which GE was charged with illegal monopolies [1].

In the following years, RCA became known for their production of domestic equipment (radio and television sets) and vacuum tubes (thermionic valves). The company also invested in the motion picture industry (film) and in broadcasting, with the foundation of NBC, the National Broadcasting Company, in 1926. In 1986, RCA was acquired again by General Electric (GE), which liquidated the company but kept NBC. Today, RCA only exists as a trademark of Sony Music Entertainment [1].

After the re-acquisition by GE, secure communications products, like the STU-III, were sold under the RCA/GE brand for a while, until the business unit was sold to Lockheed Martin, where it spun-out in 1997 as L-3 Communications Holdings. The latter was later renamed L3 Technologies, and was merged with Harris Corporation in 2019, to become L3Harris Technologies.
