Handic Bolagen was a Swedish consumer electronics import firm, founded in 1952
by Gunner Wennerström (CEO) and Stig Wennerström (Vice CEO)
in Göteborg (Sweden). In the 1950s and 60s, they became known for their
range of consumer audio equipment, which included broadcast receivers,
tape recorders and record players, many of which were manufactured in
Asia and sold under the brand name 'Handic'. In the 1970s, when 27 MHz Citizen's Band (CB)
radios and police scanners became popular, Handic
became a household name for such devices throughout Europe.
By 1977, its products were sold in more than 25 countries, including Europe,
Japan and the USA. The company's equipment could often be recognised by its
distinct bright orange colour.
When home computers became popular in the late 1970s, daughter company
Handic Computer AB was established, soon followed by Handic Software AB.
These companies helped lift off Commodore computers in Sweden, but were closed
in 1986 after Commodore had set up its own distribution channel.
Today, the name 'Handic' is owned by Bergsala AB and is used
as Bergsala Handic AB.
