Alcatel — since 2006 known as Alcatel-Lucent — was a French global
manufacturer of telecommunications equipment,
headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt (France).
The roots of the company date back to the late 19th century, with
the French company
La Compagnie Générale d'Electricité (CGE) and
the American Western Electric Manufacturing Company.
Alcatel — originally the abbreviation of Société Alsacienne de
Constructions Atomiques, de Télécommunications et
d'Électronique — was a small company in Mulhouse (France) that was absorbed
by CGE in 1966.
In 2006, the French company Alcatel was merged with the American company
Lucent,
with the latter being the successor of AT&T's
Western Electric. The company focussed on fixed, mobile
and converged networking hardware, IP technologies, software and services,
and had operations in more than 130 countries. It also owned the
prestigious American Bell Laboratories
[1].
In November 2016, Alcatel-Lucent was acquired by Nokia
and was merged into Nokia Networks, whilst
Bell Labs remained an independent
subsidary of Nokia.
The Alcatel-Lucent brand name has since been replaced
by Nokia, but the name Alcatel-Lucent lives on as Alcatel-Lucent
Enterprice (ALE), the enterprise division of Alcatel-Lucent that had been
sold to China Huaxin in 2014 [1].
