Floppy disk drive replacement

This page describes how the internal floppy disc drive (FDD) of the Wavecom W-4100(D) decoder can be replaced by a modern equivalent with USB stick. This may be necessary when the original floppy discs have become unreliable over time, or are missing altogether. Although there are a number of FDD replacement candidates that might be suitable for the W-4100, we have chosen the GoTek 3.5" FlashFoppy with OLED display, as it is the most versatile one.

Steps
  1. Purchase GoTek FlashFloppy with OLED display (and 3.5" light beige enclosure)
→ Ensure that it is flashed with the latest FlashFloppy firmware ➤ FlashFloppy wiki
  2. On the FlashFloppy: set jumper S1 (no other jumpers)
  3. Replace the existing FDD by FlashFloppy
  4. Format a USB memory stick as FAT32 - not ExFAT, NTFS or any other format! 1
  5. Use WinImage (on Windows PC) to create a 1.44 MB disc image
  6. Copy the contents of the original floppy into the disc image
  7. Name the disc image something like
    W4100D_6_60.IMA
  8. Copy the disc image onto the USB memory stick
  9. Place the memory stick in the USB socket at the front of the FlashFloppy
  10. Start the W-4100
  11. Select the desired floppy disc image on the device's OLED panel
    - Rotate the knob until the name of the disc image is displayed
    - Press the knob to store the setting
  12. Reboot the W-4100
  13. The device should now start as usual (but faster)
  1. On Apple MacOS, FAT32 is known as FAT (MSDOS).
The selected disc image will be remembered next time you start the W-4100, which means that no further interaction with the FlashFloppy is required. A normal boot with the original FDD takes approx. 8.5 minutes to load. With the FlashFloppy in place, this is approx. 1.5 minute.
