Radio direction finder
- not in collection
E-383-N was a
radio direction finder,
developed by Telefunken in Berlin
(Germany) in 1933. The receiver is based on the Telefunken E-404-N,
and is suitable for the 75 kHz - 3.3 MHz frequency range (90 - 4000 metres),
divided over 5 bands.
It is also known by Wehrmacht (Army) designator EP2a
and by Luftwaffe (Air Force) designator Ln 26 588.
The EP2a was also built in Switzerland.
|
The receiver could be connected to a variety of directional antennas,
uncluding one that could be mounted on top of the device. The device itself
could be mounted in an (intercept) vehicle, but could also be installed on
an optional metal frame, making it suitable for outdoor field use.
The image on the right shows a typical EP2a receiver as it was restored
by German collector Dieter Schudnagis (DJ4YS).
After restoration, this EP2a was ready for its first field test,
which was carried out in Gollhofen (Germany) in April 2016,
as part of the 23rd Historical Radio Meeting. 1

The device in the image is extremely complete. It is mounted on the
optional outdoor frame
and is equipped here with a directional antenna at its top
and an external speaker on a small platform at the rear. Also note the
presence of a watch on the leather pad at the centre of the front panel.
|
During the field test in April 2016, the receiver behaved extremely well.
Despite the early time in the year, the weather was much better than expected
when the test team set the receiver up in a field west of Gollhofen,
early in the morning.
After installing the EP2a/N383N on its frame
and mounting the large window antenna on the big
rotatable base,
the receiver was switch on and was soon able to acurately pinpoint the
direction of an LW test transmitter that was placed several kilometres away.
In the image on the right, the test panel is
plotting the direction on a map.

The field test was a great success and it was a wonderful opportunity to
see this device that was built in 1936, operating in its full glory again
in 2016, exactly 80 years after it was made. Many thanks to Dieter Schudnagis
for restoring the device with such a great sense of detail,
bringing it to the HAM radio event in Gollhofen and for allowing us to
take photographs of it.
