Commercial Telephone Adapter
HYX-60/TSEC was a Commercial Telephone Adapter,
manufactured in 1983 by Teledyne, Inc. 1 in Lewisburg (TN, USA).
It was bolted to the bottom of a Western Electric 500-series telephone set
with dial, and acted as a voice terminal for the analogue KY-65 and KY-75 (PARKHILL)
narrowband HF radio voice encryption systems (actually voice scramblers).
It has a 6-wire connection to a telephone exchange. At the rear are
additional connections for Audio, Radio and Recording.
|
The image on the right shows the device, which acts as a base for
the WE500 telephone set. The telephone set is bolted to the HYX-60
by means of four long bolts that extend from the bottom, through
the HYX-60, and mate with existing threaded holes in the telephone's
base panel.
The handset has a special
noise cancelling microphone and an
integrated push-to-talk switch (PTT).
It is detatched from the
telephone set and is permanently wired to the HYX-60.
The telephone is wired to the HYX-60 via a
9-pin DE-9 connector,
integrated with its base panel.

|
The device is powered by a conventional AC adapter that is
permanently wired to the HY-60. It is suitable for 110V and 220V
AC mains networks. It is likely that the device was connected
to an external telephone exchange that had voice encryption
capabilities. The connectors at the rear suggest that the device
could also be used over 2-way radio links, for which the PTT was used.
At the front of the HYX-60 is a red LED marked CIPHER REC.IND.
It is likely that it is driven by the external encyption device
to indicate that the line is secure (i.e. encrypted).

At present we have no further information about the HYX-60.

past, please let us know, so that we can further

The NSN database [1] does not reveal the manufacturer of the HYX-60,
but the name plate on the device itself identifies the manufactuer
as 26687, which is assigned to Teledyne Inc., today known as
Teledyne Brown Engineering, Inc. The name 'Teledyne' is also
stamped at the bottom of the telephone set.

The HYX-60 is bolted to the bottom of a modified Western Electric 500-series
telephone set by means of four long bolts. After removing these four bolts
from the bottom of the HYX-60, the telephone set can be
lifted from the 9-pin DE-9 socket.
The HYX-60 itself consists of two compartments —
an upper half and a lower half, each holding a PCB — separated by a
metal panel.
|
The bottom section consists the power circuit
and the interface to the handset. It is slotted into a card-edge connector
inside the HYX-60. The card contains several power transistors and
regulators, plus a two large and one small relay.
The image on the right shows the component side of the bottom PCB.
The card-edge connector is at the right. At the top right is a 6-pin header
to which the handset is connected. The PCB is mounted in place with
three protruding screws and another two from the side, that mate with
the heatsink of the large power transistor.

The wiring between the two PCBs, and between the PCBs and the
connectors at the rear of the device, is located in a
narrow compartment at the rear.
This is also the place where the DC voltage from the mains adapter
enters the device. The handset is wired directly to the bottom PCB.
|
The upper compartment (i.e. the compartment
directly under the telephone set) holds the interface to the Radio and
Audio connectors at the rear. It also holds the
DE-9 socket to which the WE500
telephone set should be connected.
It is wired directly to the wiring compartment.
The image on the right shows the interface board, with its card-edge
connector at the right. The PCB is held in place by four screws in
the corners. All integrated circuits (ICs) have date codes from 1982,
which confirms that the device was probably manufactured some time
in 1983.

The device shown here was found on eBay in March 2026 [3] and
appeared to come from New-Old-Stock (NOS), as it was still
packaged in the original wrapping paper. No documentation was found
with the device.
