PE-122
Smart card reader/writer - this page is a stub

PE-122 was an external smart card reader/writer with an RS232 interface, developed around 1997 by Philips in France. It was used for reading and writing TB-100 smart cards, such as the Dutch Girotel bank cards (Chipknip) and the security tokens used with the Philips PNVX crypto telephone, the PFDX fax encryptor and the PPSX data encryptor.

The device comes with a serial cable with a 8-pin RJ45 plug at one end, and a 9-pin DE-9/F connector at the other end. At the rear end of the DE-9 plug is a socket for a 5V DC power supply. A suitable cable is provided for 'stealing' 5V from the PS2 keyboard or mouse mini-DIN socket that used to be available on desktop PCs.

Unlike its predecessor – PE-112 – the PE-122 is only suitable for the later types of smart card (post-1990) with have their contact pads at the left center (rather than at the top left).

Interior
The device is housed in a plastic enclosure. It consists of two plastic case shells that are held together with a single screw, hidden below the white text label at the bottom. After removing the label and the screw, the two case shells can be separated and the interior is exposed.

From the date codes on the various components it seems likely that the device featured here was manufactured in late 1997 or early 1998.
