Parallel to serial converter

The P-590A (Russian: П-590А), is a morse transmitter that
is driven by a 5-level punched paper tape. It was used by the air force
of the countries of the former Warsaw Pact for transmitting pre-recorded
telegraphic messages over radio.
As part of the R-142 radio station,
the device was also used as a parallel-to-serial convertor
for the Russian Fialka M-125 and M-125-3 cipher machine.
|
The P-590A can read the 5-level punched paper tape created by the
Fialka cipher machine
and convert it into morse code, so that it can be sent directly
with a (short wave) radio transmitter. This off-line method was used
when the Fialka machine was located outside the radio station.
The device can also be connected directly to the parallel output of the Fialka,
in which case no punched paper tape is involved and the 5-bit digital output
produced by the Fialka is directly translated into a single-bit morse code
signal. In the case, the device acts as an in-line serialiser.

In the latter case, the 10-pin data output at the right side of the Fialka,
is connected directly to the 10-pin data input port of the P-590A.
